Class Rings: Why I’ll Wait

Four years just wasn't enough...

I opened an email yesterday from the university alumni association advertising that class rings will go on sell next week. …Class rings? That’s for graduates, not budding juniors like me. Right?

The Texas Exes site describes this tradition simply by saying, this recognizable ring is a symbol of your academic success and a celebration of your transition to a new stage of life… [it] serves as a tangible reminder of a student’s achievement and memories.” These words caught me off guard and made me anxious- transition, new, reminder and memories. For the time being, I would like to stray as far away as possible from all of the above, thank you very much.

Let’s just face it, change isn’t easy. As each new semester rolls around, it takes most of us a good week or two to adjust to our new schedules. Early 8 a.m. classes petrify us each morning, but we all know that it gets easier as the weeks roll on. With the vigorous schedules that most college students take on these days, it takes hard work to balance a “full plate” of classes, a job, an internship and both off and on-campus organizations. It’s no wonder that most college students have had to prioritize these commitments above a little thing called sleep.

It’s not that we are never in need of change, but let’s just not push it. Why celebrate the memory of something that’s not yet over? I still have over a year left of time to relish in the life of a college student. Balfour cannot take this from us! So to make it easy on ourselves (wouldn’t that be nice?), let’s just keep things the way they are, at least for the moment.

Why? Because this is the perfect stage in life- one that we’ll all definitely remember forever. It is all-too-soon to have this class ring strapped upon my finger reminding me of my achievements and memories of college. Let’s bond together and stop worrying about preserving the past and focus on enjoying the moment. Carpe Diem!

Class rings seem to be more important at some schools than others. What do you think? Do you have a class ring? Let me know by leaving a comment below or sharing on my Facebook or Twitter page!
