On Tuesday, at least one million defective birth control pills were recalled by their manufacturing company, Pfizer. The 14 lots of Lo/Ovral-28 tablets and 14 lots of generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets were recalled after an error was discovered that fudged the distribution of ”active” tablets.
Unlike the spinach, peanut butter and beef scares of yesteryear, the defective bills are not fatal. But if you ingest the damaged little pill, you do run the risk of “unintentional pregnancy.” Hence the uh-oh.
Pfizer officials and doctors are urging women who might have taken the deficient contraceptives to use non-hormonal barrier methods; i.e. condoms and diaphragms.
This is a big slip-up for Pfizer, the world’s largest research-based pharmaceutical company. It’s not like they botched cold medicine. This is serious business so expect some fallout from affected couples everywhere — and some babies come fall.
